Maxwell Kane is one of the main characters in Freak the Mighty. The author, Rodman Philbrick, describes Max as an abnormally big teenager and is not really intelligent. In addition max is brave and caring . In the novel, the author reveals that Max brave when "Even a total goon like me can't stop Killer Kane, but I go ahead and try to anyhow. My hands are numbed out and I can hardly walk, so all I can do is sort of fall on top of him and try to shove him loose from her" (Philbrick#128). This shows that he was brave enough to defend Loretta from his father and save her, and he was not even strong enough to defeat his dad. Furthermore, the author shows that Max is as caring when "There are some many people crowed around, all he can see are feet and knees, and people are lifting their little kids up to see the fireworks explode like hot pink flowers in the sky, and so I just sort of reach down without thinking and pick up Freak and set him up on my shoulder"(Philbrick#32). This because he picks up Freak, so he can see and Max cares that he is able to see the firework. Based on the character's behavior and dialogue in this novel, you can clearly see that Max is brave and caring .
