Gwen is one of the main characters in Freak the Mighty. The author, Rodman Philbrick, describes Gwen as a cautious lady and protective when it comes to Kevin, or as Max calls him, Freak. In addition, Gwen is both protective and apologetic. In the novel the author reveals that Gwen is protective when, "Fair Gwen grabs Freak and puts him in the wagon and I swear, she almost runs home, like if she doesn't get away quick something really bad is going to happen" (Philbrick #20). This was after Max comes up out of the "down under" or the basement and here comes Freak right behind him humping his way up the stairs with barely any breath in front of Gwen. Furthermore, the author shows that Gwen is apologetic when, "She called to say how sorry she was" (Philbrick #22). This shows that she is apologetic enough to call and tell Gram that she was wanting to apologize to Max about what she did before when he came out of the cellar and Freak coming out of the cellar how he was. Based on the character's behavior and dialogue in this novel, you can clearly see that Gwen is protective and apologetic.
