Kenny Kane, whose nickname is Killer Kane, is Maxwell's
father. Maxwell does not know his father very well because he has spent the
last several years in prison for killing Max's mom. Nonetheless, Max has
buried memories of his father that cause him to feel fear whenever he thinks of
him. Once Killer Kane is out of prison, Max learns that he is a mean and
dishonest man. For example, when Max sees his dad strangling Loretta Lee,
he says, "...he's got that same cold killer look because he wants her to
die, like he wanted Mom to die, and nothing else matters except what he
wants" (Philbrick 129). This shows that Killer Kane is so mean that
he will do whatever it takes, including violence or murder, to get what he
wants. In addition, Killer Kane proves that he is dishonest when he has a
serious talk with Maxwell, and he swears to him that he did not kill Annie,
Max's mother (Philbrick 133). Based on this quote, it is obvious that
Kane is a liar because the narrator proves later on that Kane did actually kill
Max's mother. As you can see, Kenny Kane is a very mean person who cannot
be trusted.
